Minor Creative Writing

A Book Doesn't Write Itself.

We had to follow a minor in the third year. A minor is like a mini-major. It's a secondary academic discipline - another subject to focus on in addition to the major you have. So if you have interests that don't connect, you could minor in another field.

A lot of people minor in subjects that somehow support their major. They might focus or specialize in a certain area. Other people go a completely different direction for half a year.

I questioned what I wanted to do for a long time. Firstly I wanted to do something with languages, after that, something with psychology. In the end, I ended up doing a minor in Creative Writing. I choose the Dutch Creative Writing minor. I did this because it could help me with my language proficiency. As you can see I work a lot in English and do most stuff in English. Obviously, I am fluent in Dutch as well, but I thought writing a book might just help me even more.

We had a lot of creative freedom during this process. I choose to write a fantasy book. During this time I worked together with Wietse Dik. He was my
co-editor during this half-year. In a half year time, I rewrote the text countless times and changed the plot even more. It was a lot of work, but I thoroughly enjoyed all the time I worked on it. I am very proud of how my book turned out.

The back of the book reads:

The gigantic forest in the center of the island separates the realms in the East and the West. Neither of the two realms has ever dared to explore this area. But when the imperious kings hear of a mighty weapon, their daughters go into the forest to find it. Princess Olivia from the West, who is always looking for adventure. And Princess Amelie of the East, who can never get enough answers. The forest offers them adventures and answers, but as the princesses prepare for an inevitable battle, they find that things aren't always what they expected.
